Mercury in the 2nd House
Dhan Bhav — wealth, speech, family
Favourable Results
When Budha (Mercury) occupies the 2nd house (the Dhan Bhava, the house of wealth, speech, and family), the native (the person whose chart it is) has a prominent forehead and is of virtuous character (sheelvan): upright in conduct, truthful of word, and pure of speech. He is devoted to his father and to his guru (his teacher). He is fond of sweets. A keen observer of subtle things and intelligent, he grasps the inner essence (marma) of poetry, mathematics, and all the shastras (the classical sciences). In the assembly of scholars he is honoured like Guru Brihaspati (Jupiter, the preceptor of the gods) and Bhagavan Vyasa (the sage who compiled the Vedas). His speech is brilliant (tejasvi) and commanding; he triumphs over his adversaries, and no one is able to stand against his word. By his intellect and the strength of his own arm he becomes mighty (pratapi) and wealthy, and he enjoys pleasures of every kind. The wealth he earns by his own intellect and effort he gives away in charity (daan), and he performs many auspicious deeds. He earns his livelihood through writing, trade, work connected with education, accountancy, and the like. In life he is happy, progressive, and honoured by the government. His relations with his in-laws (his wife's family) remain excellent. If he takes an interest in dharma (the righteous path), the native becomes an excellent yogi (a spiritual adept).
Unfavourable Results
If there is an inauspicious influence upon Budha, the native is cruel, devoid of learning (vidya), selfish, and destitute. He often suffers from skin disease. He is unhappy on account of his children. From keeping birds and from association with his wife's sister (sali), the condition of his wife and his wealth deteriorates. He has little happiness from his father; around the age of 17 or 34, his father's health or financial position grows weak. Even if the father is a man of great wealth (lakhpati, one worth lakhs), it brings the native no benefit.
