When Budha (Mercury) occupies the 3rd house (the Sahaja Bhava, the house of siblings, courage, and communication), the native (the person whose chart it is) is of healthy body, blessed with an excellent memory, dear to his kinsmen, religious (devoted to dharma), renowned, courageous, hardworking, and long-lived. He has many friends, and his home is full of prosperity. He is a skilled trader (vyapari): he understands the hidden secrets of commerce, and brings even difficult people and high officials under his sway. He has many brothers and sisters, and he helps his brothers and kinsmen. He travels a great deal. He takes an interest in jyotish (astrology) and the occult sciences (gupta vidya, the hidden arts). He does work connected with trade or with the law courts. The native is either greatly drawn to the enjoyment of sense objects (vishaya bhoga), or else, especially toward the end of his life, through intense dispassion (vairagya) he becomes a sannyasi (a renunciant who gives up worldly life).

Unfavourable Results

The native is wicked, greedy, foolish, deceitful, wretched, of impure character, and cowardly. He acts willfully, doing as he pleases without forethought; on account of this his mind stays restless and he suffers loss of wealth. If the native becomes anyone's enemy, he cuts that person down to the very root. He proves baneful even to his own elders, his paternal uncles (taya and chacha) and his maternal uncle (mama) and the like; because of him these relatives remain unhappy and are uprooted from their homes. If inimical grahas (shatru grahas, enemy planets) cast their drishti (the aspect, the gaze a graha throws upon another point in the chart) upon Budha, then his brother dies, or his sisters become barren.
