Mercury in the 1st House
Tanu Bhav — self, body, personality
Favourable Results
In the lagna bhava (the 1st house, the ascendant), Budha (Mercury) is digbali, possessed of directional strength, and it destroys the doshas (afflictions) of the kundali (the birth chart). By its influence the native (the person whose chart it is) is of superior intellect, with a body that glows like heated gold, keen and retentive in mind (medhavi), radiant with vigour (tejasvi), and blessed with a long life. Such a native is skilled in diplomacy and statecraft (kutaniti), and so does not easily fall under anyone's sway. He is generous and compassionate, and he holds knowledge of all the shastras (the classical sciences): art, music, mathematics, jyotish (astrology), and the like. He observes his dharma diligently. Such people earn their livelihood through publishing, craft, lecturing, and writing. He is esteemed in society and honoured by the state, and he gains wealth from the government. He is of a roving disposition, forever on the move; more than once he resides in distant regions and undertakes pilgrimages (tirtha yatra). He finds happiness in his wife and children, and the middle phase of his life passes in greater comfort. If he takes an interest in tantra-mantra (esoteric ritual practice), the native is able to dispel bhoot-badha (affliction caused by spirits).
Unfavourable Results
If inauspicious grahas (malefics) are seated together with Budha, the native is mischievous and greedy by nature. His body is subject to vata disorders (ailments of the wind humour), to boils and pimples and the like, and to diseases of the stomach. His appetite is poor. Intoxicants, and the eating of eggs and meat, are harmful to him. Such a native's illness tends to be quite intractable. In childhood, in his fourth year, he suffers affliction. His children are few in number. Once or twice in life some accusation, a false charge, is sure to be leveled against him. His relations with his in-laws (his wife's family) and with his son do not remain cordial.
