Mercury in the 5th House
Putra Bhav — children, intellect, romance
Favourable Results
When Budha (Mercury) occupies the 5th house (the Putra Bhava, the house of children, intellect, and romance), the native (the person whose chart it is) is handsome, of good character, of sharp intellect (tikshna buddhi), skilled in reasoning, of joyful disposition, cheerful, and devoted to the gods and the guru. He is fond of wearing all sorts of different garments. He earns his wealth through the cleverness of his intellect (buddhi-chaturya). He is an excellent counsellor and skilled in matters of justice. He is fond of solitude, and is influential in society. He gains no wealth from the government. The native's first child is often a daughter, but he assuredly comes to have sons and grandsons. He takes an interest in mantra-shastra (the science of mantras). A word that suddenly escapes his lips is sure to come true.
Unfavourable Results
The native is quarrelsome, arrogant, sickly, and deceitful. He keeps the company of wicked people. He has few sons. Sometimes the first pregnancy is lost, or there are no sons at all. He causes others suffering by means of magic and sorcery (jadu-tona). If Budha is combust (asta, drawn too close to the Sun, where its results are suppressed) or falls under the aspect (drishti) of inimical grahas (the planets reckoned its enemies), then it brings affliction to the father and the maternal uncle (mama).
